Although pregnancy is a natural process, during the 40 weeks of pregnancy a woman’s body goes through many changes. These are both hormonal affecting mood and flexibility and postural as the baby grows. Back pain is very common and although for some it is self-limiting, many women don’t get the appropriate care. Chiropractic offers a safe, non-invasive way to help alleviate pain and make carrying your baby easier and better for you.
Your body goes through many changes so that you can carry a healthy baby to full term. Your centre of gravity shifts forwards, and your pelvis tilts forwards shortening some muscles and tightening others. The curves in your lower back and neck increase, which can put extra stress on your back. Hormonal changes cause ligaments to become looser and some joints such as the sacro-iliac joints and pubic symphysis can become lax and painful.
Do you have to have back pain to benefit from chiropractic?
Chiropractic care helps many women through pregnancy, whether they have back pain or not. Specific approaches such as the Webster technique ensure that the pelvis is functioning optimally. During birth the pelvis is going to relax and open to allow the baby to be born. Restrictions in the pelvis can make this more painful or difficult. Chiropractic adjustments have been associated with shorter births and less medical intervention.
How is being pregnant going to affect me?
Every woman is different. Many report new or different emotions, husbands often report mood swings even when their wife declares she is just fine. Pregnancy can be an exciting time for some and for others it can be stressful. It’s important to remember that during a pregnancy you are your unborn baby’s environment and you want your baby to have the best possible start. You can't predict how you are going to feel until you are actually pregnant and even then it may be a roller coaster of unexpected emotions, both positive and negative. Remember that your nervous system amongst other things coordinates your emotions, hormones, organs and joints (not just your joints).
